Ex-Taraba Governor Nyame Jailed 14 Years For Fraud

Former Governor of Taraba state, Jolly Nyame, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has sentenced a former Taraba State governor, Jolly Nyame, to 14 years in prison without an option of fine.

Mr Nyame was found guilty of 27 out of 41 counts of alleged diversion of public funds while he served as governor of Taraba State.

He was charged by EFCC for allegedly diverting N1.64 billion while he served as governor between 1999 to 2007.

The judge sentenced the defendant to four different terms in prison, after finding him guilty of receiving gratification, obtaining public funds without due consideration, criminal breach of trust and gratification.

The various sentences include a time of prison for two, five, seven and 14 years respectively.

The judge Adebukola Banjoko however noted that the terms are expected to run concurrently, meaning he would serve 14 years in jail unless the conviction is upturned by a higher court.

In the lengthy judgement that lasted over four hours, the judge narrated how several witnesses brought to court by both parties corroborated the allegation of fraud against the defendant.

The EFCC presented various witnesses who alluded to the fact that Mr Nyame approved the diversion of various funds amounting to over N345 million to a company, Saman global, within five weeks in 2005, among other allegations.

The court held that Nyame is guilty of over half of the charges. According to the judge, Adebukola Bankole, the actions of the perpetrators under the watch of the ex-governor can be likened to the story of Alibaba and the 40 thieves.

Robert Lewandowski Wants To Leave Bayern Munich - Agent Pini Zahavi

Robert Lewandowski Wants To Quit Bayern Munich - Agent Pini Zahavi

Robert Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich, according to his agent Pini Zahavi, who told Sport Bild magazine that the Bundesliga’s top scorer “feels that he needs a change and a new challenge in his career”.

Zahavi, the Israeli agent who helped facilitate Neymar’s world-record transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain last year, said Lewandowski’s reasons “are not money or a specific club, as nearly all top clubs would like to have the world’s best striker in their ranks”.

The 29-year-old Poland striker, whose contract with Bayern runs until 2021, has scored 106 goals in 126 Bundesliga games for the club since switching from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. He helped the team win the league each year, chipping in 29 goals this past season.

Bayern’s chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, recently ruled out a transfer. “We know what we have in Robert Lewandowski. Nobody need worry, he will also play football here in Munich next year,” he said.

Lewandowski parted with his previous agent, Cezary Kucharski, in February, when he turned to Zahavi. Sport Bild reported that Real Madrid’s interest has cooled after Lewandowski’s failure to score in the Champions League semi-finals against them, but claimed that PSG, Chelsea and Manchester United are interested.

C.Ronaldo's goal ranked number one in UEFA Top 10 Goals of 2018 Champions League

C.Ronaldo's goal ranked number one in UEFA Top 10 Goals of 2018 Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo has beat out competition from his team-mate Gareth Bale to finish top of UEFA's list of the best Champions League goals of the 2018 campaign.

Ronaldo's overhead kick in Real Madrid's quarter-final first leg win at Juventus has been selected first ahead of Bale's similar effort in Saturday's final against Liverpool.

Bale scored with a spectacular acrobatic volley just two minutes after coming off the bench for Madrid, reacting brilliantly to divert Marcelo's cross into Loris Karius' top corner with a flailing left boot.

The goal was described by Gary Neville as 'maybe the best he'd ever seen' but Ronaldo's strike at the Allianz Stadium has been deemed better by UEFA's panel.

Ronaldo's overhead kick from Dani Carjvaval's cross was a similarly acrobatic strike but with a lower trajectory and more power, that sailed past Juventus No 1 Gianluigi Buffon leaving the legendary goalkeeper no chance.

His strike garnered a similar reaction with many hailing it as the greatest Champions League goal of all time ahead of Zinedine Zidane's volley in the 2002 final.

The rankings are determined by a six-man committee of UEFA Technical Observers that include ex-Manchester United boss David Moyes, former Inter Milan defender Christian Chivu and current Latvia manager Mixu Paatelainen.

Ronaldo and Bale finished first and second respectively ahead of Gonzalo Higuain's volley from a free-kick for Juventus against Tottenham in the round of 16.

Antoine Griezmann's bicycle kick for Atletico Madrid against Roma in the group stage is fourth while Edin Dzeko's powerful volley for Roma at Chelsea at the same stage comes fifth in the list.

Ronaldo and Bale both have a second goal included in the list. Bale's side-footed volley away at Borussia Dortmund comes sixth while Ronaldo's curling effort in the home game against the Germans is 10th.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Fred's free-kick for Shakhtar Donetsk against Roma in the last 16 is seventh while Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne earns eighth spot for a long-range strike against the Ukrainians Shakhtar.

Speaking when he paraded the suspects, the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, said the naval rating used his uniform and position to transport vehicles snatched by the criminal gang to buyers.

He said,
“The lance corporal often used his position and uniform to transport vehicles snatched by the gang and helped dispose of the stolen vehicles. The gang, which is also on the wanted list of SARS in Lagos and Kwara states, was responsible for the spate of armed robbery and car snatching along the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway, Oyo State, Lagos, Kwara and other states in the South-West. Six of the suspects were initially arrested at their hideout in the Ilasa area of Ogbomoso by SARS unit, Ogbomoso, following credible intelligence by the command’s strategic partners.”

In his narration, the naval officer said a friend introduced him to the gang while begging the police to forgive him.

He said, “I am a seaman in the Nigerian Navy. I told one of my friends that I needed a car and he introduced me to these people. Although I have my personal car that I use, I wanted to change it and my friend introduced me to them.
“I have bought more than two cars from the gang, but I later got to know that the cars were stolen. I know it is not right for me to buy such cars, I plead with the command to have mercy on me.”

Also paraded were a soldier, Azeez Olaide, 22; and a former soldier, Ibrahim Lawal, 22; for their involvement with a criminal gang that specialised in kidnapping and raping their female victims.

Odude said Olaide was a member of the 202 battalion, Bama, Maiduguri, while Lawal deserted the Nigerian Army Depot, Zaria in 2014.

Also arrested with the pair was one Kehinde Adeniji, 29.

Odude said, “The modus operandi of the suspects was to go about kidnapping people, robbing them and sexually abusing female victims.
“The suspects abducted one Rasak Michael and his girlfriend, Rashidat, at the Mobil area on Oluyole Estate, Ibadan on April 31, 2018, and took them to a hotel where they were kept till the next day.
